Operator and owner experience

About Edward
Keystone is built around Edward van den Bergh’s practical experience of building, buying, operating and leading businesses, assessing senior people and navigating complex organisational and ownership change.
He brings founder, owner and operator experience together with senior executive-search and assessment experience, organisational-transition experience and lived experience of business transfer.
Edward leads the Keystone relationship directly. The proposition does not depend on handing the owner to a junior delivery team.

Experience behind the work
Edward’s background is relevant because Keystone’s work sits across business reality, people, ownership judgement, search and execution.
Edward has founded, bought, built and led businesses across three countries. He understands the pressure of making ownership decisions while still carrying the day-to-day business.
His executive-search and assessment experience informs disciplined ownership-profile definition, market investigation and judgement about successors and counterparties.
His professional-services and complex-transition experience supports the coordination of people, decisions and specialist work around one objective.
Edward brings lived experience of business transfer and the practical difference between agreeing an outcome and making the transfer work.
Edward leads the Keystone relationship directly and remains accountable for the connected transition work within Keystone’s scope.
Search and assessment
Edward’s search background supports disciplined definition of what the ownership solution requires, broad market investigation and careful assessment of credibility, capability, intent and fit.
That experience matters where the future may depend on identifying and assessing an individual successor, a management solution, a strategic buyer, an investor or another ownership possibility.
Keystone’s search work is ownership-solution search. It is not executive recruitment or headhunting.
Organisational and ownership transition
Complex transitions bring together commercial facts, people, responsibilities, specialist disciplines, timing and the practical transfer of authority.
Edward’s experience helps Keystone keep those elements connected while the owner or shareholders retain the material ownership decisions and specialists retain responsibility for their professional conclusions.
His lived experience of business transfer informs the work around successor credibility, continuity, the outgoing owner’s role or exit and a handover that gives the new owner the authority to lead.
Lived business transfer
Edward experienced business succession first-hand at Expat Help, the relocation and integration company he founded in 2009.
After years of building the business together, Edward and his long-standing business partner reached different views on its next chapter. Edward wanted to invest further in technology, scalable systems and continued expansion; his partner preferred to preserve a strong, service-led business without necessarily pursuing scale for its own sake.
At the end of 2018, his partner acquired Edward’s entire shareholding and became sole owner of Expat Help. Edward remained involved for approximately two months to support the handover before stepping away.
The experience gave him first-hand insight into successor credibility, timing, continuity, the outgoing owner’s ability to let go, and the point at which responsibility must genuinely transfer.
A good handover provides continuity — but it must also give the new owner the authority and space to lead differently.
How Keystone works
Edward leads the Keystone relationship directly from the first ownership question through the phases Keystone is engaged to deliver.
Keystone is transparent about what it leads, what specialists own and what the owner or shareholders are being asked to decide.
Keystone works with or helps appoint the specialist expertise required for an assignment. Existing trusted advisers can remain involved. Specialists retain responsibility for their professional conclusions.
One relationship. One transition plan. Clear scope. Clear responsibilities. Transparent charging.
Why Keystone
A business carries people, customers, relationships, reputation, risk and history. Its future deserves more than a predetermined transaction process.
Keystone starts with the ownership question, builds the evidence, develops the credible routes and, where engaged, leads the work through execution, completion and handover.
A confidential first step
The first conversation is about the business, the ownership question and whether Keystone can genuinely help. If there is fit, the Transition Roadmap is the first structured paid step. Any PREPARE, EXECUTE or COMPLETE phase is scoped separately before it begins.
